Retention Basin
A retention basin's primary purpose is to manage stormwater runoff by storing it and releasing it gradually through evaporation and ground absorption thereby preventing flooding and erosion. The Kuau Bayview Retention Basin serves to collect "non-point-source discharge" (the run-off from the lots & streets in Kuau Bayview) so that any sediment or impurities can be filtered out by the vegetation and soil while the water evaporates. The storm drains in Kuau Bayview channel all rainwater to the Retention Basin so that none of it reaches the ocean directly. This basin requirement for all new developments stems from the 1948 Clean Water Act as amended in 1972.
