The Makana Park Retention Basin
The large Upper Retention Basin on the Hana side of Makana Park is 100% owned by the Parks Department. It is full of Haole Koa (HK) and poses an extreme fire hazard to Kuau Bayview. The Makana Park manager told me on Sept 30 he has already put through a work order and they are currently lining up equipment to clear the entire park basin of HK. Once cleared, that basin and park will serve as a large firebreak for Kuau Bayview. We are also clearing HK behind Lot 76 (top of Laenui), and Tom & I are almost finished removing all HK from the KB Retention Basin at the front entrance. HK has been classed as "brush" in the new fire codes. Clearing is now required to avoid $1000/day fines. MFD Brush Mitigation Guide. The Holomua Fire in Sept/25 has everyone worried. Images will be posted here to document the progress as the clearing happens. After clearing, perhaps KB kids could build their bike ramps in this unused basin.
