Mantokuji Zen Temple

The shoreline along the Mantokuji Soto Zen Mission at the north end of Lae St is rapidly eroding. Photos are from 2007, 2008, 2011, with the most recent photos taken on Dec 20, 2017 when record rainfall of 5.78 inches in one day broke the old record of 3.21 inches set in 1955.

Members of the 111-year-old Mantokuji Soto Zen Mission of Paia are hoping to save their temple building and cemetery from rapidly increasing erosion. Over the years several acres of land have been lost and close to a hundred gravestones have been swept out into the shore break as Mother Nature reclaims these souls.
